So, in celebration of a week-long of no schoolness, here, have some Nicholas Teo and Amber Kuo to celebrate~
And because I’m too lazy to type characters, or pinyin with shengdiao, here, have some shengdiao-less, but fully translated lyrics:

As with KAT-TUN before this, it’s easier to point out the RADWIMPS songs I don’t like rather than the ones I do. So here, have a pretty, emo-ey, adorable song (No seriously like, why isn’t the party he’s addressing with him already? I’d have him in a heartbeat…). Anyway, I felt sufficiently motivated after acquiring PS C6 Portable to make… something. It has the lyrics on it though, so has to count for something, right?
one of the sexiest covers around… hshs
and it’s cute how he got really happy when people said it was エロい.. and all embarrassed when people started calling him エロー生さん
I’ve listened to a lot of Rolling Girl covers before but OMG bedroom voice + eargasmic harmonization

Full band cover of the Adventure Time song “I’m Just Your Problem”, originally composed by Rebecca Sugar for the character of Marceline, re-done in a radio-friendly gothic metal kind of style. Vocals by Nicole Vaquerano. Guitar solo by Carlos (youtube.com/KarlosRock92).

An Introduction to Shinhwa: Vocals!
It seems like Shinhwa usually gets attention for their dance and their variety prowess than for their vocals, so I decided to make a post collecting samples of their vocal abilities. I have NO TRAINING in music, so I can’t talk about them technically (hopefully someone else could chime in?) so I just mentioned my own personal thoughts. If you know of some particularly great performance that I missed please add!
Eric (Eric Mun / Mun Jung Hyuk): the 4D leader and lead rapper. He has a speaking voice that I would listen to read the phonebook and similar deep rap style. His rhythm seems to be really solid (she says, knowing nothing about rap even moreso than singing!), and there was an interview/post from someone who worked with him as a producer who said he can record his raps in one go. So there’s that. He is the only member to never go solo, and he has never trained in singing. Finding examples of Eric singing is like finding a needle in a haystack, and when he DOES sing on stage he always seems really nervous and his voice wavers a lot. Bless his little heart.
Minwoo (Lee Minwoo): one of the 3 main singers and the lead dancer. Around debut he introduced himself as ‘rap and vocals’ but I don’t really think he’s a good rapper, heh. His charisma and stage presence is, for me, the best out of everyone in the group; he can hold up a stage by himself better than anyone, as seen in his various solo activities. Vocally, he seems to maybe go off-key a bit more than the others? In low soft songs like ‘On the Road’ he seems less solid or stable than the other singers do. I really love his voice in jazzy things like ‘Cool Life’. When you can only hear one person throwing in a high harmony, it’s usually Minwoo…he seems to really like harmonizing, heehee.
Dongwan (Kim Dongwan): Dongwan was originally tapped to be the lead singer, but unfortunately he tended to choke in the recording booth and so the role was given to Hyesung instead. It’s easy to tell why, though, because his voice is really stable and he has a good range too. He usually sings in the upper range but I like his lower tones a lot! He has an interesting color to his voice—people imitate and tease his speaking voice a lot XD—which can seem kind of nasally at times. He’s been pretty successful in his solo career singing ballads. Also, he is hilarious and adorable. Just throwing that out there.
Hyesung (Jung Pil Gyo): Lead vocalist, for good reason. His voice is powerful and expressive, he has a good range, and I haven’t heard him go off key more than a couple of times. He has that kind of husky throat-cancer voice than Yesung has. He usually sings in a middle-low register, so I’m not sure how HIGH his range goes—anyone know some good examples of falsetto from him?
Junjin (Park Choong Jae): At the beginning he was just one of the rappers along with being the only dancer as good as Minwoo, but after debut he started training in singing and starting in the later albums he’s one of the vocalists. Compared to the main three he’s a little less stable and his range is a little limited, but I LOVE Junjin’s voice! It’s really warm and expressive. His lines in ‘On The Road’ are my favorite, and some of his solo songs I could use to put myself to sleep, they are so soothing.
Andy (Andy Lee / Jason Lee / Lee Sun Ho): Maknae and rapper. Andy has a really unique speaking voice that doesn’t come across fully in his rapping or singing. At debut he was just a rapper, and he still raps pretty exclusively in Shinhwa’s songs, but he’s had a fairly successful solo run as a singer. His voice isn’t particularly impressive, but it’s sweet and sincere. He has an interesting quiet confidence about him that I really like when he does solo variety appearances, which he hasn’t really utilized in his solos, imo. I’d really like to see him promote with something that takes advantage of his sincere quality, rather than the cute or cool concepts he’s tried before.
LIVE VOCALS: It’s really hard to find good clear examples of Shinhwa performing live. X| Radio performances are usually a good source, but those are mostly the purview of rookies and YouToube hadn’t been invented yet when Shinhwa were rookies. Concert footage is also sketchy, for the usual reasons and because Shinhwa Changjo really like to sing along. It’s awesome, but it means that in fancams from audience members the performers are often kinda drowned out, lol.
These are about as raw as you can get as far as their voices go: they’re not trying to sing WELL, for the most part. XD But! You can hear Eric sing, and he’s actually pretty good. The Pocheon song is what made me really go “Wow, he has a great sense of rhythm.” Also, Minwoo the composer (awesome!) and Minwoo the rapper (LOL).
Songs with everyone: I really like their harmonies whenever they do them, and while they don’t always sing live, when they DO they commit, which I love. For their entire comeback promotional cycle this year they performed with zero backing vocals, which led to some slightly spotty quality—but still, extremely gutsy and impressive with the dancing included.
Eusha Eusha! @ Music Bank 1998: TINY BABY SHINHWA omg so little and cute.
On The Road, performance on MUST: I flove this song. It’s my favorite on the Return album, and maybe my favorite Shinhwa song period. Ugh Junjin come to meee
On the Road, Big4 Concert 120811: Because one performance of OTR is not enough! Less clear than the other, but I prefer this arrangement and it doesn’t have what’s-his-face singing. Sorry, what’s-his-face.
Venus, Goodbye stage 120505: There’s that lack of backing vocals. Get it, ajusshis.
Gonna be Alright, 6th Album live @ MNET Showking:
For You (To My Lovely Fans) @ Winter Story Concert: Eric actually sings! And Dongwan cracks me up, doing his line without any technique and then belting out that adlib.
Crazy 041129 @MBC: I love Dongwan’s lower register here ahhhhhh

DUOS: because the Shinhwa boys are precious creatures that love each other and I’m pretty sure none of them PREFER being alone on stage. XD

그리워 (Longing) 110903: I love his delicacy here, and much higher than usual.
